Is It Time for Repiping?

dirty-pipesDo you know when your home was repiped? If the answer is “No,” then you either have a very new home, or you really need to have your plumbing system inspected.

There are many reasons why you could need a repiping, and they mostly have to do with the age of your system. But don’t let a plumber tell you that you need repiping for any reason… We’ll give you the rundown on when this service is needed and how you can find out for yourself.

Old Plumbing System

The problem with older plumbing systems is that a lot of them were created with the worst materials. Lead piping, galvanized steel, polybutylene… None of these materials are good for you or your family, as they can lead to contaminants in your water supply. If your plumbing system uses any of these materials, you need repiping as soon as possible.

The Water Is Strange

Pipes that have gone bad won’t be hard to miss. If the water coming out of your tap is oddly colored, tastes bad, or smells horrible, then we have bad news: your pipes are probably corroded or damaged.

However, this may not require an entire home repiping. A reputable plumber in Camarillo, CA will be able to inspect the plumbing for you to determine which pipes in the system are affected. Repiping can be done on a very small scale to address the individual problem, too.

Chronic Leaks

Leaks are an iconic plumbing issue. But that doesn’t mean they should be making guest appearances every year. If you’ve been calling in a plumber for leaks more than once this year, it could be the first sign that you need repiping.

The reason this would happen? If the pipes are too old and beginning to leak, there’s a strong chance that the other pipes in the system are the same age. Many repiping projects are started thanks to the appearance of frequent leaks.

Water Pressure Problems

Have you ever turned on the kitchen or bathroom sink faucet only to be greeted with a slow, thin stream? That means you have water pressure issues!

Again, you’ll need a plumber to tell you for sure where the issues are coming from—there’s no need to request a whole-house repiping if it isn’t necessary. Some of the reasons water pressure problems occur include:

  • Hard Water: Excessive concentrations of magnesium and calcium in the water can create scale in side your pipes. This hard substance is infamous for blocking pipes and lowering water pressure.
  • Leaks: A leak may have formed in an area where you cannot see it, such as behind the walls. Leaks will create water pressure issues.

What to Do if You Suspect You Need Repiping

Get an inspection from a trustworthy plumber, first! They’ll be able to confirm that you need repiping to begin with, and then they can prescribe the right solution. Your repiping may require that the entire house have its pipes changed out, or it may require only a small section. You won’t know for sure unless you call.
